How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, roughly 9–10 hours of driving across the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Most tours split the journey over two days, stopping at Aït Benhaddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. Art Desert Tours runs 4-day and 7-day tours from Marrakech to Merzouga.

When is the best time to visit Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with April and October the most popular months. Summer days often exceed 40°C, and winter nights in the desert can drop close to freezing, so pack warm layers between December and February.

How long is the camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes?

The camel trek takes about 1.5 hours and is timed for sunset. It ends at a Berber desert camp where you have dinner, enjoy traditional music around the fire and spend the night. You can wake early to watch the sunrise from the dunes.

What kind of desert camp will I stay in?

We offer both traditional Berber camps and luxury desert camps, and blankets are provided for cold desert nights. Tell us your preference when you request your itinerary.

Are your Merzouga desert tours private?

Send us a request with your dates and group size and we will reply with an itinerary and price; you confirm only when you are happy with it. Is a Sahara desert tour safe for solo female travelers?

Yes. Solo female travelers are very welcome. Our guides are licensed and experienced, and a female guide can be arranged on request. Private tours mean you travel only with your own guide and driver.
