10 days Atlantic Coasts birding tour via Sahara Desert : Imagine birds in an orchard of blossoming almond trees or an oasis of date palms, encircled by a warm desert, under a clear blue sky, and framed by the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, which are as high as the Alps and covered with snow. In sharp contrast to the soggy and dreary weather back home, the temperature is ideal!

Here in southern Morocco’s picturesque Kasbah region, we’ll concentrate on learning about some of the most fascinating bird species in northern Africa. This extensive birding tour of southern Morocco, which has been refined over time, departs Marrakech and travels south into the Sahara at Merzouga before retracing its route west to Agadir, which is located on Morocco’s breathtaking Atlantic coast.

Day 1: Marrakech to Oukaimeden {distance: 82,8km}

We will greet you wherever you are in Marrakech and then take you to Oukaimeden (2600m), which is located in the High Atlas Mountains. A good variety of native species, including the Southern Gray Shrike, Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Spotless Starling, Moroccan Magpie, Moussier’s Redstart, and House Bunting, should be seen as we travel through the farmed fields. We will look for the endemic Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker and Blue Rock Thrush a little higher up, among the rocky slopes. We will look for the attractive African Crimson-winged Finch on the snowline once we arrive at the Oukaimeden ski resort. Other species here include Rock Sparrow, Black Wheatear, African Chaffinch, Alpine Chough and Atlas Horned

Day 2: High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate and Boumalne du Dadès {distance:96,5km}

After an early breakfast, we leave the mountains and drive from Marrakech to Boumalne du Dades via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260 meters). We’ll try to spot Tristram’s Warbler on the pass. As the road climbs, we may see raptors like the long-legged buzzard and Bonelli’s eagle. Before reaching Boumalne du Dades, we’ll stop in Amerzgane to look for the rare Maghreb Wheatear and Desert Lark. We’ll also explore the barrage at Mansour Eddahbi to see Marbled Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Black Winged Stilts, Maghreb Lark, Cormorants, Herons, and various waders.Dinner and accommodation in

Day 3:Boumalne Dades to Tagdilt Track {distance:26,1 km}

We will leave early today to go to the Tagdilt Track, which is unquestionably one of the best places to go bird watching in southern Morocco. If the weather permits, we will spend the majority of the day exploring this area, and then we will visit a rocky canyon to look for Maghreb Wheatear, Desert Lark, and Pharaoh Eagle. There are also excellent chances of seeing Red-rumped Wheatear, Thekla Lark, Trumpeter Finch, Temminck’s Lark, Short-toed Lark, Cream-colored Courser, and the highly nomadic Thick-billed Lark.Dinner and accommodation in Boumalne du Dades.

Day 4: Boumalne Dades to Merzouga via Goulmima {distance:247,9 km}

We start by visiting a Todra gorge to look for Tristram’s Warbler, Black Wheatear, Blue Rock-Thrush, Rock Dove, Crag Martin, and possibly Bonelli’s Eagle. Then, we head east and stop at a scrubby wadi to look for the elusive scrub warbler, where we might also be rewarded with a Trumpeter Finch and a white-crowned Wheatear.

Day 5: Merzouga to Rissani via Erg Chebbi Dunes {distance:41,9 km}

Day 6: Merzouga to Ouarzazate {distance:366,6 km}

The day of the Merzouga to Ouarzazate transfer. Drive across the Anti-Atlas Mountains, which are made up of cliffs, deep valleys, and rugged hills. Southern Gray Shrikes and White-crowned Wheatear could be abundant when birdwatching along the road.

Day 7:Ouarzazate to Agadir {distance:352,8 km}

We will first keep our eyes open for various larks by the roadside and for wheatears as we drive west over the Anti Atlas mountains, into the Souss Valley, and then on to Agadir. In the Souss Valley, we may see Black-crowned Tchagra, Laughing Dove, Cirl Bunting, and Spanish Sparrow, and over the town of Taroudant, we may see Little and Pallid Swifts. Lastly, after another exciting stop, we arrive at our hotel in Agadir for the night.

Day 8 , 9: Agadir to Oude Massa via Sous Massa National Park {distance:65 km}

An early start will get us to the Atlantic coast in time. We’ll spend the morning in Sous Massa National Park, walking along this important spot for the endangered Bald Ibis and searching the vegetation for Squacco Heron. Easily observed birds include Marbled Duck, Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Black-shouldered Kite, Glossy Ibis, and more. After lunch, we’ll drive into the Souss valley’s semi-arid steppes, looking for Lesser Short-toed Lark, Cream-colored Courser, and Stone Curlew. Day 10: Agadir to Marrakech {distance:249,7 km}

We travel through the Atlas Mountains from Agadir to Marrakech, stopping along the way for a few birdwatching stops. We arrive in Marrakech late in the afternoon, have a free evening to explore the city’s old quarter and the magnificent Jema-el-Fna square, which is an incredible experience for any visitor—snake charmers, water vendors, spice stalls, and the allure of haggling in the Souk (OPTIONAL), and then head to the airport, where our journey comes to an end
