Yes, you can do a day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga, but it’s a long journey (about 9-10 hours one way), making it very rushed for just one day. Most travelers opt for a 2-day or 3-day tour to fully enjoy the Sahara Desert experience.
However, if you’re short on time, some operators offer private 1-day tours with an early start (around 4-5 AM) and a flight or fast driver to reach Merzouga. You’d have a brief visit—possibly a camel ride, dune exploration, and a quick stop at a desert camp—before heading back.

There are various areas in the Moroccan Sahara that travelers might discover. The expansive sand dunes of Erg Chigaga and the stunning peaks of Erg Chebbi are the two most noteworthy locations. Additionally, there are the smaller and less striking desert areas of M’hamid’s Erg Lihoudi and Zagora’s Tinfou Dunes.
The trip across the desert
1. The 4-hour journey from Marrakech to Ouarzazate includes a stop at Kasbah Ellouze. Go from Marrakech.
2. It takes 70 minutes to get from Ouarzazate to Agdz (and the Kasbah Azul guesthouse).
3- 90 minutes to get from Agdz to Zagora….
4- 70-minute drive from Zagora to M’Hamid El Ghizlane.
5-M’Hamid El Ghizlane to the camp; approximately 75 minutes.
